Gordon highlights Balerno Fairtrade

Local MSP Gordon Macdonald has raised the following motion in parliament welcoming the ongoing recognition of Balerno as a Fair trade Village by the Fairtrade Foundation. In addition he has raised the concerns that many have of the potential impact of Brexit on subsistence farmers who depend on trade with the UK.

Motion S5M-00815: Gordon MacDonald, Edinburgh Pentlands, Scottish National Party.

That the Parliament welcomes the recognition by the Fairtrade Foundation that Balerno is a Fair Trade Village; acknowledges that the principles of fair trade encourage world citizenship but is concerned that the Brexit decision could have a huge detrimental impact on the lives of the farmers and workers in developing countries who grow food consumed here as the UK begins to reshape its relationship with the EU; understands that the UK will need to renegotiate how it trades with other countries, both in Europe and the rest of the world, and considers that this could put fair trade farmers and workers in a vulnerable position.
